A Large-Scale Analysis of the Efficacy of Treatment for Osteoarthritis of the Knee
A large-scale analysis of the efficacy of low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy for knee osteoarthritis was performed in 2014 (Sit et al.) by carefully selecting 9 randomized controlled trials with a total of 483 patients. The effects of pulsed magnet therapy were compared not only with a placebo but also with the effects of high-frequency pulsed fields (27 MHz).
The authors chose to perform this analysis because osteoarthritis is one of the most prevalent health conditions affecting the elderly. Another reason for the decision was the fact that low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy has already proven several times that it can stimulate cartilage growth on cellular level.
The selection was based on the Oxford Quality Comparison System, from which the 9 studies mentioned above qualified. They were selected primarily on the basis of the quality of their methodological approach. Important factors were also sufficient diversity of the selected patients and, last but not least, the bias or degree of influence of the authors of the specific studies themselves.
The results of all 483 patients who qualified for this analysis demonstrate significant positive effects of pulsed magnetic therapy – a success rate of 77%. At the same time, the results suggest that the optimal length of treatment varies from patient to patient and should therefore be individually determined for the highest efficacy.
This analysis therefore irrefutably confirms that low-frequency pulsed magnetic therapy effectively improves the quality of life and physical health of patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis, although in some cases it does not guarantee pain relief.
This analysis also showed that high-frequency magnetic fields have no beneficial effect in this case.
