Characteristics of trigeminal nerve pain: Nervus trigeminus is a mixed motor-sensory nerve (trigeminal nerve), with prevailing sensory fibres. It has three major branches: the ophthalmic nerve, the maxillary nerve and the mandibular nerve. Pathology may occur at any level of the trigeminal nerve, from small branches in the area of the teeth, jaws and paranasal sinuses, up to the cavernous sinus and subarachnoid space and the brainstem. Trigeminal nerve pain may be caused by a tumour-induced compression, trauma, nerve ischaemia, inflammation of the nerve and surrounding tissues, infection (herpes zoster), autoimmune and metabolic diseases, toxic effects, and others.
Trigeminal neuralgia (trigeminal nerve) develops due to involvement of the sensory component, and is classified as primary or secondary neuralgia. Management of primary neuralgia requires a pharmaceutical approach and surgical treatment, while symptomatic treatment is used for secondary neuralgia depending on the primary process.
